Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Full Time

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) administers intravenous and inhalation anesthetics to render person insensible to pain during surgical procedures or other medical procedures.

Primary Duties

Patient Care:

1. Monitors the vital signs and condition of patients undergoing surgical or medical procedures under general anesthesia or regional and local anesthetic block of moderate sedation.

2. Prepares prescribed solutions and administers anesthetic following specified methods and procedures.

3. Informs Physician of patients condition during anesthesia.

4. Performs pre- and post anesthesia patient visits and documents anesthesia ore on patient records.

5. Checks patients pulse, blood pressure, respiration and notes general condition of patient and any physical characteristics that might predispose to difficulty during the anesthetic period.

6. Checks patient chart for indication of patients primary surgical problem and any other significant co-existing medical problems. Also ascertains if patient has received prescribed preoperative medication, if patient has cross-matched blood available if needed, and if results of routine laboratory studies are acceptable values.

7. Review nurses notes and question patient regarding last time of ingestion of food or drink.

8. May start intravenous infusion or assist operating physician in doing so in preparation for induction of anesthesia. May induce anesthetic state, secures the patients airway with mask, oral pharyngeal airway, laryngeal mask airway or endotracheal tube.

9. Upon accomplishing anesthetic state, secures the patients airway with mask, oral pharyngeal airway, laryngeal mask airway or endotracheal tube.

10. In the usual setting, the staff nurse anesthetist is supervised by the operating physician at time of induction of anesthesia and periodically throughout the case as may be needed to maintain a favorable condition of the patient in response to the stresses of surgery and anesthesia.

11. The anesthetic state and appropriate muscular relaxation, from slight to muscle weakness to flaccid paralysis with artificial ventilation, is maintained in response to the needs of the procedure.

12. Intravenous fluids, blood products, and stimulant drugs may be administered from time to time as is necessary to mains the most favorable condition of the patient throughout the duration of the procedure.

13. At termination of anesthetic state, patient is recovered under observation of the nurses of that unit if patients condition is satisfactory, or remains under observation and care of nurse anesthetist if condition of patient is in jeopardy.

14. Provides competent care and ensures the provision of a safe and comforting environment resulting in a high level of patient satisfaction.

15. Provides education to patients/families/significant others, incorporating age-specific criteria and assessment of readiness to learn.

16. Maintains patient confidentiality.

17. Maintains standard universal precautions.

18. Maintains and completes all required patient record documentation.

19. Utilizes critical thinking skills and decision making at an advanced level, i.e., lab, diagnostic test interpretation, etc.

Education: Graduate of an accredited Masters level program of nursing education that fulfills completion requirements for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

  • Licensure/Certification: Possession of an active current Arkansas Registered Nurse license and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Anesthetist license, active current certification by a nationally certifying body, current BLS and ACLS certifications. Is currently certified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetist or recertified by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetist. Certification is to be renewed by recommended renewal date on certification card.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Ability to manipulate various types of electronic and computer equipment. Ability to operate equipment related to area of expertise and required to perform job.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Must possess the ability to interact and communicate in English, both orally and written, with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner exhibiting tact, enthusiasm, and patience. Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Able to lift/push/pull patients to transport and/or reposition. Able to lift and carry equipment and supplies of up to 30 pounds.
  • Essential Cognitive Abilities: Possesses the ability to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to the specialty area and calculate in apothecary and metric systems for drug administration. Must possess the ability to document appropriate clinical information. Has the ability to interpret rules/regulations/accrediting and licensing standards sufficiently for implementation. Maintains concentration and organization while dealing with multiple issues. Possesses the ability to analyze data and formulate an appropriate plan of action.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements: Possesses the ability to respond to patient and family needs by interpreting verbal and non-verbal expressions.
  • Exposure to Hazards: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and potentially contaminated body fluids and hazardous materials. OSHA risk factor: Category I. Potential risk of physical injury attributed to moving machinery and supplies.
  • Other: Knowledgeable of the mission, vision, and values. Operates within the concept of patient-focused care. Evolves into an effective team member. Must adhere to dress code, good grooming and personal hygiene habits. Cognizant of and conforms to all policies and procedures. Participates in supporting the facility in meeting the expectations and requirements of regulatory agencies.
